I wanted to bring a rigorously professional and proactive approach to the business of literary agenting, which for many decades has hardly developed at all.
Yet while much of the publishing business remained frozen in stasis, the outside world was busy changing.
The result is a classic mismatch between supplier and the market. Publishers believed, for far too long, that they could go on in their own sweet way. Book buyers would, they believed, keep on buying the same sort of books, in the same old ways.
As you know, nothing could be further from the truth.
The legacy publishing model is declining. The market is shrinking. High street booksellers are folding: many town no longer have one. Amazon now accounts for nearly half of many publishers’ sales. One customer – half your sales!
Excited By The Future
But this need not depress us. In fact, I relish the challenge of change. It creates an environment I’m comfortable in, where possibilities can be discussed and realized. It motivates people.
The key question is this: in a world where change is the new norm – how are you going to profit from it?
And – who is on your team?
The Deal Is Just The Start
Most agents are happy just to do a book deal for a client. Then their attention goes elsewhere.
That’s never been my approach. The deal is only the beginning. What else can we do? How can we look after you better? How can we help you and the publisher to succeed?
We believe in being proactive. We actively seek out and exploit new opportunities. For example, we were the first agency in the world to host our clients’ websites. The first to run communities for our authors’ fans. That’s because we see ourselves as your partner in success.
If you prosper, we do, too.
