Redhammer and Scholastic Children's Books are today delighted to announce a new, exciting acquisition for Scholastic’s fiction list: THE JOSHUA FILES by MG HARRIS.

Fighting off competition from four other publishers, Scholastic have secured a 2-book deal with world rights for a major six figure sum from Peter Cox's Redhammer agency, whose previous major children's success is Michelle Paver's series CHRONICLES OF ANCIENT DARKNESS.

Book One in the series, THE JOSHUA FILES: INVISIBLE CITY is an exciting and tense adventure for 11+ readers. Elaine McQuade, MD at Scholastic Children's Books says, "Maria Harris writes so well. She has created a spooky action adventure with an incredibly clever but accessible plot where ancient Mayan myths meet the X-Files - it gripped us from beginning to end and we know that it will do the same for young readers."

"THE JOSHUA FILES is the biggest children's deal for a first-time writer this year," says Cox. Josh is such a universally accessible kid - he's smarter than Alex Rider, but much more vulnerable and human. It was wonderful for Maria, a first-time author, to have so much interest from publishers," continues Cox. "The quality of the offers and the proposals we received from them was extremely high. Finally, when we carefully looked at the marketing proposals, the sheer commitment and enthusiasm of Scholastic's entire team shone through brilliantly. They are a powerful force in children's publishing, and we have total confidence in them to make this the hit it deserves to be."

A double transatlantic whammy this weekend for Redhammer’s client Michelle Paver.  On Saturday, The Times (London) carried a major feature in the Books section looking for a successor to the Harry Potter mantle: Michelle was one of six authors short-listed.

And across the pond, the New York Times carried “one of the most brilliant and perceptive reviews I’ve ever read” in Peter Cox’s words.  Book three in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness – Soul Eater – has just been published in the States and the review can’t find enough good things to say – here are some brief extracts:
  • “Hugely entertaining series”
  • “Generates tremendous suspense”
  • “Paced like summer blockbusters, the novels open with a bang and pick up speed from there…”
  • “The books are page turners, and “Soul Eater” is perhaps the most thrilling…”
  • “Readers will find that Torak and his companions could go a long way toward filling that Potter-size hole in their lives.”
The entire review is well worth reading here. -

Orion Books is launching its first ever podcast later this week to promote Michelle Paver's Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series. Wolf Brother, the first in the three-book series, will be broadcast over 13 weeks from this Thursday (7th June) on Guardian Unlimited and iTunes.

The audio is read by Ian McKellen. The podcast's launch coincides with the publication of the paperback of the third title in Paver's series, Soul Eater, on 7th June. The conclusion will coincide with publication of the hardback of Outcast--the fourth title in the series--on 6th September. The Guardian will drive traffic to the podcast from its website via banners and printed advertising, and Audible is offering a bundle offer on the series downloads for the duration.

Orion will also promote the podcast from its website. Each podcast will be topped and tailed with a recorded message promoting the official series website www.torak.info. "We are lucky to have such an amazing product with which to entice new readers to the series at this stage in its life and see the podcast as the perfect way to do so," said senior marketing manager Claire Brett. "The 13 week lifecycle of the podcast will take us up to publication of the hardback of the next in the series, Outcast, thus creating the perfect platform for the launch."

Redhammer manages and represents Michelle Paver, was instrumental in securing Ian McKellen to read the audiobooks, runs the official worldwide reader fan site (www.torak.info). Redhammer’s Peter Cox hosts and produces the Litopia Writers’ Colony podcast.

Orion Books has acquired from Peter Cox at Redhammer Management world rights in PETER O’TOOLE: HELLRAISER, the definitive biography of legendary actor Peter O’Toole, written by Carolyn Soutar.

Peter O’Toole has dominated the world of movies, theatre and front pages for almost 50 years. In 2007, he received his seventh Oscar nomination, for his role in Venus. “Carolyn worked as Peter’s stage manager,” says Orion's Ian Marshall, “and saw him professionally and personally during the 1980s. After her successful biographies of Dave Allen and Rudolf Nureyev, both of whom she also worked with, Carolyn has pioneered a unique and very intimate style of biography: one that works extremely well with subjects such as O’Toole, Nureyev and Allen.”

Based on her own experiences and interviews with those who know him, HELL RAISER tracks O’Toole’s astonishing journey from his humble beginnings as the son of a bookmaker in Leeds to his movies and life in 2007.

“It is the first major biography of O’Toole in over a decade,” says Redhammer’s Peter Cox. “Carolyn’s book will demolish a number of myths and show true insight into this extraordinary man. Working with someone over a period of time, as Carolyn has done, not only shows you their private side, but takes you backstage to meet the people he has worked with. No one else could write such a deeply revealing biography as this.”

One of the most distinguished theatre and screen actors in the world today, Sir Ian McKellen is best known to moviegoers for his roles as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy and as Magneto in the X-Men trilogy. He is also a firm fan of the CHRONICLES OF ANCIENT DARKNERSS series of books by Redhammer’s client Michelle Paver, saying of the first in the series, WOLF BROTHER: “like other great children's books which also entrance adults, WOLF BROTHER conjures up an utterly believable, yet original world where the story grips you to the very last page."
We are delighted to announce that Ian McKellen will read the entire, unabridged manuscript of the much-anticipated book four in the series, OUTCAST, for release later this autumn. The photograph shows Ian McKellen recording book one in the series. -

Susanna Wadeson at Transworld Publishers is thrilled to have pre-empted from Peter Cox at Redhammer Management Ltd world rights (excl North America) in The Global Warming Survival Kit by Brian Clegg for a very substantial advance.

A brilliant response to the growing clamour in the media about global warming, and unique in it’s approach, Brian Clegg’s Global Warming Survival Kit accepts climate change is upon us and - taking a hard scientific look at the likely scenarios - gives clearheaded advice to the individual about how to prepare for the worst it can throw at us.

Susanna Wadeson, Publishing Director at Transworld Publishers, says “In just the past couple of months a tornado has hit homes in London, the North-West has had dramatic flooding, much of the Midlands has lost power for 24 hours or more while the North Sea is eroding the Eastern coastline before our eyes. It is early February today and it is warmer than 12degrees C in Scotland. Who knows what the summer will bring. None of us will want to be without Brian’s book and I’m thrilled that we’ll be publishing it this year! ”

The Global Warming Survival Kit will be published in trade paperback by Doubleday in Autumn 2007.

To mark the imminent paperback publication of last year’s bestselling THE PALACE DIARIES, author Sarah Goodall has just appeared on The Sharon Osbourne Show (“it’s a really, really good read!” raved Sharon to Sarah).

Hailed as “Racy, outrageous and hilarious - there's never been a Royal book like it” by the Mail on Sunday (who also gave it one of the year’s biggest serialization) THE PALACE DIARIES is a unique insider’s view of what really went on during the most tumultuous period for the British monarchy since the abdication of Edward VIII. Sarah’s story starts with a one-in-a-million stroke of luck that sees her plucked from the London streets and straight into the Alice in Wonderland world of St James’ Palace, where she answers the postbag for His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. It is a “temporary” job that will last more than twelve years, and will open the most private of Royal doors to her…

Promoted to become HRH’s assistant on Architecture, Sarah soon crosses a significant boundary, and becomes an increasingly close personal friend (the other staff now have to call her “Madam”). But all too soon, Sarah witnesses the Prince and Princess’s marriage hitting the rocks…

THE PALACE DIARIES “offers a lively portrait of everyday life in the Royal Family... it’s forthright and personal" says Scotland on Sunday. Rights to THE PALACE DIARIES have so far been sold to France, Holland, Australia, Romania, Sweden, Italy, Estonia, Finland, Germany and Latvia; all other territories and translation rights are being sold by its British publishers, Mainstream Publishing. Click here to read some of the extraordinary press and media coverage this amazing book has received so far (pdf file).

Redhammer is pleased to announce a new book deal for our client Martin Bell OBE to write THE TRUTH THAT STICKS:NEW LABOUR'S BREACH OF TRUST. Says Peter Cox: "This will become the definitive epitaph for the wasted years and broken promises that has come to symbolize Tony Blair’s legacy: Martin is no shrill polemicist, and his judgement is all the more damning for being so carefully weighed and forensically delivered." Martin’s biography is here , and the publisher’s press release is below.
